Mailula explains CAF Champions League tears

Striker Cassius Mailula has opened up over the heartbreak of being knocked out of the CAF Champions League while explaining his emotional reaction when breaking down in tears at full-time.

Sundowns' Champions' league ambitions went up in smoke as they were knocked out of the competition via the away-goals rule by Wydad following a 2-2 draw at Lotfus Versfeld in a second-leg semi-final.

Mailula, who had a sensational season for Sundowns and was one of the major catalysts behind the Brazilians' push for the CAF Champions League title, couldn't hold back the tears as his side were knocked out.

"I think I was too emotional," Mailula told MSW.

"From day one, I knew that this [winning the Champions League] is what I want. It's a dream that I've always wanted.

I would have loved to be in the final and win it in my first season with the first team. To even lift the trophy with Themba Zwane 'Mshishi'. It's one of the things that I said in 2016 that I want to do one day.

"But for me, I don't think it's over, because I think I've learnt a lot in this competition and I think it's one of those days in football where you have to experience such things to learn.

"I don't think that I lost in that game. I think that was a very expensive experience. You don't buy that experience and to experience such, it was really terrible.

"I think it took me time to realise that we are actually out. Even after the final whistle I was like, 'are we going to extra time?' and Abubaker [Nassir] told me 'no it's away goals'.

"That's why I was so emotional and it hurt me deep. I believed that if we were going to Extra-Time, I don't think they were going to have a chance.
