Mokoena: Pirates had a better season than Sundowns

Retired midfielder Teboho Mokoena insists Orlando Pirates had a  better season than runaway champions Mamelodi Sundowns this season.

Sundowns clinched a record sixth consecutive DStv Premiership title by 16 points, while the Sea Robbers lifted two cups with the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

"To be honest, Pirates produced a better performance this season, they've won two cups, and clinched a Champions League spot, we don't deny that, but they didn't win the league," Mokoena tells KickOff.

"It's a similar argument to the one about who should be the coach of the season between Rulani Mokwena and Jose Riveiro.

"But the fact is, recognition should go to the person who won the league, hence Teboho Mokoena beat Monnapule Saleng for the Player of the Season.

"Why should we give it to Saleng when he has not won the league?

"I think Saleng would have won the Footballer of the Season if Pirates won the league.

"Pirates performed well, but the only problem is they didn't win the league. Both sides performed at the end of the day.

"For Sundowns to be beaten in the Champions League semi-final, that's a good performance on its own.

"But if we look only in domestic football, it's Pirates that did better, but Sundowns did well also.

"But I will choose to be in Sundowns' shoes any day.

"Nobody recognises second place, no matter how good he played or performed that season.

"We only talk about first place."
