Sink or swim for Chiefs forward this season…

Kaizer Chiefs forward Christian Saile Basomboli has been given reminders about what will keep him appreciated at Naturena instead of being offloaded.

Basomboli has started his first full season at Chiefs after joining in January from Zambian club Nchanga Rangers.

Three goals from 16 appearances is what Basomboli had last term and into this campaign he has scored once in six appearances having been given minutes in all but one of the games played to date.

"Without goals, you are nothing as a striker, especially as a foreign striker playing in South Africa," says fellow Congolese Lelo Mbele whose spent all his time in South Africa as a teenager playing Zulu Royals and Orlando Pirates.

"The most important element to your game as a striker must always be goals because without goals you are nothing.

"So, for me, Christian needs to be vocal enough with the midfielders to make them know how he wants to be fed the ball so that he scores.

"I don't how much he talks to the midfielders at Chiefs, but he needs to make them understand all his movements because that is what he will use to hurt the opposition.

"When I was at Pirates, I made friends with all the midfielders from Tico (Onyekachi Okonkwo), Tso (Benedict Vilakazi) Cheese (Lebohang Mokoena), Duku-Duku (Joseph Makhanya, Chansa (Isaac) to Leremi (Gift).

"I didn't speak the best English, but they understood me because I communicated with them all the time and I made them know how much I appreciated them.

"My worry is that if Christian is not communicating well with the midfielders, then I'm scared for him because he is the one that will have bad numbers in the end.

"Another issue at hand is that he needs to get into the box instead of staying on the wing because goals will come when you are in the box.

"All his good movement will be wasted on the wing because that will not end up with goals.

"As a striker you must know that goals are delivered in the box.

"Christian needs to know that he will be judged on goals at the end of the day so that is what he needs to prioritise in his game.

"He is a foreign player that was brought in to score goals so that is what he must do otherwise they will take another foreign player.

"Fans will only be happy for you if you are scoring goals.

"Being clinical is important and this season he needs to score at least 10 goals to keep him relevant at Chiefs.

"Then there is the matter of doing extras, either he arrives early or stays behind after training for extras.

"Once you get into the habit of doing finishing and shooting drills it makes it easier for you to deliver in match situations.

"A striker must only home to rest after he has reached certain targets at training," says Mbele.
