Antony investigation takes new 'twist'

The investigation into the allegations of abuse by Manchester United star Antony has now reportedly taken a new twist.

The English club recently placed the player on a leave of absence after he was accused of domestic abuse by one of his former girlfriends.

Two other women have since accused the Brazilian of similar transgressions, although the winger has denied any and all wrongdoing in the matter.

Both Sao Paulo and Manchester police have confirmed they are investigating Gabriella Cavallin's claims that she was assaulted by the former Ajax Amsterdam on four occasions.

A second woman, Ingrid Lana, came forward during an interview with Record TV, revealing that Antony could have potentially killed her during an assault in October 2022.

However, the third woman, Rayssa de Freitas, has now reportedly recanted her abuse claim, and dropped her case against the Selecao forward, according to The Telegraph.

De Freitas initially stated that she was attacked by Antony and another female, Mallu Ohana, in the 23-year-old's Land Rover after the trio had partied in a Sao Paulo nightclub in May 2022.

She was said to have fled the vehicle when it stopped at a traffic light and later needed hospital treatment after the incident.

De Freitas had also accused the player of sexual assault, but all the allegations made by her have now been formally retracted at the Sao Paulo Civil Police headquarters.

With the incident said to have taken place just over three months before Antony joined United in an £85 million (R2 billion) transfer, questions have been raised over the Red Devils' background checks, or lack thereof.

However, the report adds that the Manchester club did, in fact, conduct due diligence on the player before signing, but found no evidence of domestic abuse allegations or history of run-ins with the police.

Antony, who is currently in Brazil, will continue to delay his return to United until the situation is resolved, as agreed with the EPL giants.
