Bizarre kit malfunction causes stir in AFL clash

An embarrassing kit malfunction caused a major stir during the quarter-final clash between Enyimba and Wydad Casablanca in the African Football League.

Africa's newest tournament got underway this past weekend, with three sides in the four matches claiming victories, while the other game ended in a stalemate as all the first legs of the quarter-finals were concluded.

The opener between Simba SC (Tanzania) and Al Ahly (Egypt) on Friday ended in a 2-2 draw, while Mamelodi Sundowns beat Petro de Luanda (Angola) 2-0, TP Mazembe (DR Congo) claimed a 1-0 win over Esperance (Tunisia), and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) made their way past Enyimba (Nigeria) with a 1-0 margin on Sunday.

Morocco star Yahya Jabrane scored a 39th-minute penalty to ensure Wydad took a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg at their home ground. In the midst of all the action, though, something quite peculiar occurred during that final game of the weekend.

That was Enyimba's bizarre kit malfunction, with the club having to seemingly find a creative way to sort out a jersey issue for one of their players.

Defender Gabriel Innocent Okey was seen taking to the pitch with a shirt that had his jersey number and name handwritten on it with what looked to be chalk.

While it is clear the player's jersey was not properly printed and the club need to do so manually in order for the fullback to take the field, there is no explanation as yet as to how this transpired.

The second legs of the quarter-final fixtures are set to be played on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 October, and Enyimba will travel to the Mohammed V Stadium with the hope of reversing the scoreline as it stands.
