Chivaviro off the mark as Chiefs bounce back

Kaizer Chief got back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership after defeating Cape Town Spurs 3-2 behind closed doors at FNB Stadium.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo came in for the suspended Sibongiseni Mthethwa, as Itumeleng Khune, Ranga Chivaviro and Given Msimango were also recalled by interim coach Cavin Johnson following their loss to Golden Arrows.

Chivaviro striker should've made the breakthrough on four minutes and opened his account for the club with a snap shot from a loose ball, but fired wide with Keagan Dolly also running through on goal.

Chiefs did take the lead nine minutes later as Edson Castillo made a late run in the area and headed in a surging cross from Yusuf Maart out on the left.

After the early miss, Chivaviro atoned midway in the first half when he pounced on a wayward ball in the box to volley home from close-range.

The Urban Warriors, however, pulled one back three minutes before halftime when Luvuyo Phewa latched onto a ball over the top and beat Khune from a tight angle.

Spurs introduced Chumani Butsaka after the break and withdrew Jarrod Moroole, who found the winning striker in their win over Orlando Pirates previously.

Chivaviro looked to double his lead through a first-time shot from a corner-kick soon after halftime, but the defence of the Urban Warriors applied all the stops.

Chiefs continued to pile forward a little later through a pin-point header by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe from a corner, but the Botswana international went wide.

The equaliser loomed for Spurs with 20 minutes to go where a snap shot by substitute Surprise Ralani from a sloppy clearance clattered the crossbar.

It was a scare that livened up the Amakhosi who registered a third with eight minutes to go when substitute Christian Saile slammed in at the far post following an exciting short passing move.

Youngster Luke Baartman opened his account for the season in additional time after he beat Maart to a low pass in the area and fired beyond Khune.

Chiefs held on amidst the late pressure and secured the win to end a three-match losing run in all competitions.
