Huge Khune decision pending at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs will go into the latest edition of the Soweto derby faced with a huge decision to make on their veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Khune was the preferred choice in the 3-2 midweek win over Cape Town Spurs after Brandon Petersen was dropped in the aftermath of yet another blunder in the defeat away at Golden Arrows.

While it was a welcome win for Chiefs with Johnson recording his first victory since taking over, Khune was again unable to keep a clean sheet for the ninth consecutive match.

This has been the longest that the 36-year-old has ever gone without keeping a clean sheet.

Beyond that and ahead of the Soweto derby on Saturday, Khune hasn't featured in this blockbuster fixture since November 2018.

Since then, Daniel Akpeyi played in nine consecutive derby matches with Brandon Petersen then playing the last four.

The latest events at Chiefs have now presented Khune with a chance to make a return five years since he last played against Pirates.

After missing the last 13 derbies, Khune has a chance to play the latest as his works towards the end of his last playing season at Chiefs.

However, the call will be made by Cavin Johnson whether to bring back Petersen or stick with Khune who despite missing the last 13 has played 27 times in this fixture.
