‘He should play for Bafana because this is his home’

Ime Okon's burst into the top-flight scene has created a wave of suggestions that he should consider Nigeria despite having already been called to Bafana Bafana.

Born on February 20, 2004, in Johannesburg to a Nigerian father and South African mother as the second of three kids, Okon grew up in Florida (West Rand) attending his schooling at Florida Primary School and completed his matric at Florida Park High School last year.

The towering teenager has only missed a single game in his first season and already has 1295 minutes under his name this term.

Only Grant Margeman has had more minutes than Okon at SuperSport United this season after 18 games played in all competitions including full shifts against Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has taken notice and has already called him up though he is yet to earn a cap at senior level and remains eligible for the national Under-20 and Under-23.

"For me, I believe he is better off representing Bafana Bafana if the chance comes because his whole life has been in South Africa," states retired Nigerian striker Obinna Okafor who played in South Africa.

"This thing of people living their lives in a certain country and then going back to play in their roots of one or two of their parents is good, but I believe where you are born and grow up is your home.

"Adjusting to the Nigerian environment when he gets there might affect his game just like what is happening with the Nigerian squad now.

"Most of the Nigerians in that squad are either European born or bred which affects their affinity to the country because they don't have the connection and mentality of a Nigerian.

"They don't even understand our culture of playing football because they grew up in Europe.

"That is why I believe our national team is struggling now and Ahmed Musa spoke about it.

"So, I say the boy should play for the country where he was born and grew up," says Okafor.

Fellow Nigerian Abayomi Adebayo is of the opinion that the Super Eagles would only consider Okon if he was already in Europe.

"If the boy happens to leave for Europe before he plays for Bafana Bafana then it will only make sense for him to play for the Super Eagles for the sake of growing his market value," says Adebayo who has been resident in South Africa for the past 23 years.

"The truth of the matter is that Nigeria is a better football playing nation compared to South Africa, so the opportunity is bigger and better with the Super Eagles.

"However, at the same time if his career doesn't take him to Europe and he remains in South Africa, then it will make sense that he plays for Bafana Bafana.

"The boy identifies with South Africa more than he does Nigeria and I'm sure he has never been to Nigeria, so the connection is poor.

"In Nigeria, they obviously don't know about him if he is playing in South Africa.

"So, honestly speaking he should play for Bafana because he is South African, and this is his home as a South African born child," says Adebayo, a former Tembisa Classic and Bay United striker.
