Onana criticised for delaying AFCON arrival

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has received some heavy criticism for delaying his departure for the Africa Cup of Nations in order to play for Manchester United this weekend.

The African nations have already landed in Cote d'Ivoire for the tournament, which officially gets underway on Saturday as the hosts take on Guinea-Bissau.

The Indomitable Lions take on Guinea on Monday evening but they will take to the field without Onana, who will feature for the Red Devils against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Former Cameroon defender Sebastien Bassong feels the Red Devils goalkeeper's actions comes across as disrepectful .

"That sends such a bad message, not only for Cameroon, but for the respect people will have for the Africa Cup of Nations and for the way they should treat us, the equality," he said, according to the Mirror.

"If we don't even respect ourselves how can you expect other people to treat you any different.

"I like Andre, I'll always have his back when I have to, but when things like that happen... the nation, the pride of the country and the continent is way (more important than) an individual person."

Onana is not stranger to controversy with the national side after he retired from international football after leaving the FIFA World Cup in 2022 following a falling out with head coach Rigobert Song.
