Ex-Sundowns striker drops to Chinese second tier

A former Mamelodi Sundowns striker has made the move from a Chinese top-flight club to a second-tier team just months after being named the 2023 Player of the Season by his former side.

Nyasha Mushekwi has left Chinese Super League side Zhejiang Greentown in favour of a move to Chinese League One club Yunnan Yukun.

The Zimbabwean striker has penned a deal until December 2025, ending his near-four-and-a-half-year association with Greentown, where he became the club's all-time top-scorer with 75 goals – interestingly, South Africa's Dino Ndlovu is second on the team's all-time scoring chart with 42 strikes.

Reports in Zimbabwe suggest that Mushekwi opted to stay in China despite temptations to move to the Saudi Pro League or back to the DStv Premiership.

It is the centre-forward's eighth year in the Asian country since leaving Sundowns back in 2016.

His new club Yukun was recently promoted to the second tier and will get their season in the new division underway this coming Saturday against Dongguan United.

Established in 2021, Yukun are said to be embarking on an ambitious project to secure top-flight promotion, and have also brought in Romanian attacker Alexandru Ionita as well as former Ajax Amsterdam star Zakaria Labyad of Morocco.
