Johnson at risk of fiasco at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson will watch the clock with worry as its ticks towards the end of the biggest head coach job of his career.

Questions are already being asked if Johnson made Chiefs better or his broom just couldn't sweep to good effect the same way it happened for those that had held the job since Amakhosi last won a trophy.

What difference has Johnson made in his time at Chiefs?

Has he been better than any of the recent appointments – Molefi Ntseki and Arthur Zwane?

Some will ask.

Results haven't improved with Johnson having won only five from 15 games in charge.

Along the way, Chiefs have been knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by second-tier league strugglers Milford FC.

To say it was humiliating is an understatement for a club that is crying out for their trophy crisis to end.

Fortunate for him is that he has seven games to avoid turning his time in the job into a fiasco.

Chiefs have what could potentially turn into a tricky trip to Richards Bay FC, who are fighting tooth and nail to survive.

Richards Bay's agenda and that of all other opponents after that, who include Mamelodi Sundowns, will matter little to Johnson.

The 65-year-old needs to win six out of seven to bring himself above what Ernst Middendorp, Zwane, Steve Komphela, Stuart Baxter, Giovanni Solinas, Ntseki and Hunt have delivered since Chiefs last won a trophy.

Anything less will relegate him down the pecking order and possibly all the way to 'number last in class' if recent results don't change.

In-between negotiating the route to the end of his stay, Johnson must juggle an unsettled dressing room.

The presence and influence of Itumeleng Khune and Keagan Dolly can never be ignored and with their contracts expiring in June, the face of the club will change.

Edmilson Dove, Njabulo Ngcobo and Sifiso Hlanti are also all not guaranteed of staying at Naturena beyond this season.

So, while chasing results, Johnson must find the balance in aligning to the future of the club, which has building around youth in mind.
