DETAILS: ‘Ramires wanted to play in the PSL for a season’

Brazilian star Ramirez considered the PSL just a few weeks after the expiry of his last playing contract with Palmeiras three years ago.

Ramires – who has 51 caps for Brazil – had just left Palmeiras at the end of year 2020 and was keen to play on past his 34th birthday that was three months away.

In his bag, Ramires already had the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, English Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup from the five-and-a-half years he spent at Chelsea.

"Ramires wanted to come and play in the PSL for a season after Palmeiras," says top agent Simon Mimbir of SM-Desporto E Servicos, talking to KickOff.com from Portugal.

The move was liaised by retired Mozambican defender Helder 'Mano-Mano' Muianga, who played in the PSL for Manning Rangers, Black Leopards, Dynamos and Jomo Cosmos.

Ramires was already familiar with South Africa having won the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and played at the 2010 World Cup with Selecao.

He also played in Brazil's 5-0 win over Bafana Bafana at FNB Stadium in 2012.

"I discussed this matter relating to Ramires with Mano-Mano because he is closer to South Africa and played there before.

"After leaving Brazil, Ramires played in Portugal, England and China, before returning to Brazil.

"So, after he was done with Brazil, I told him that why not try a new experience in a new country.

"I mentioned South Africa and told him that it is Europe in Africa with good stadiums and has some clubs that pay very well.

"His immediate response to me about South Africa was that, 'Give me one or two days to think about this'.

"I think he already had an idea about South Africa after having been there before with the national team but just wasn't sure about the football there.

"So, I think he went to the internet and did his research and after two days he called me and said, 'Let's do it if it is one season'.

"I spoke to Mano-Mano and told him that Ramires said let's go.

"Mano spoke to Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns, but nothing happened.

"But I can tell you that Ramires was interested in coming to South Africa and it would have done the image of the PSL a huge lift.

"But the issue with some clubs in Africa is that they always drag their feet when it comes to players with huge names like Ramires.

"The sporting directors in Africa are slow when presented with players, unlike in Europe where decisions are made quickly.

"I regularly speak with Ramires and a year later we spoke again about the possibility of China or the Gulf Region, but he said he is done with playing football and doesn't want to soil his good name.

"The other issue was that he had a new girlfriend at the time, and it didn't make sense to relocate, so he will rather enjoy his retirement in Brazil without any pressure of training.

"He told me that he is now hopelessly unfit for professional football.

"Ramires is now retired and living his life in Brazil," says Mimbir.
