Downs’ abnormal load to season end

Mamelodi Sundowns will play their last four games this season having had put up with a taxing schedule that is abnormal for a local club.

From the day that they played Young Africans in Tanzania in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals after the March FIFA calendar date, Sundowns will have played 19 games when they get on with the Nedbank Cup final.

The game in Dar es Salaam was played on March 30 and in exactly nine weeks from that Saturday they will close off on another Saturday, June 1 against Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium.

That will be 19 games in 63 days and between that there have been trips to Dar es Salaam, Cape Town, Tunis, Stellenbosch, Hammarsdale and Pietermaritzburg.

The congested fixture load has come at an average of a match every three days leaving Sundowns with having regeneration sessions at odd hours after travelling.

Interestingly, The Brazilians have been forced to play their games on all seven days of the week, be it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Their competition demand has involved the DStv Premiership, CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup with one already in the bag, one gone, and one still to play for.

What has made the season unusual for Sundowns is that they also played in the finals of the MTN8 and African Football League along with participating in the Carling Knockout Cup, while they had 10 players in the Bafana Bafana squad at the AFCON finals.

Sundowns' game count is up to 54 for the season (including the walkover against Moroka Swallows) and will reach 58 as they still have another four to play.

Rulani Mokwena's men also had another load of 17 games in 10 weeks from October to December last year after having gone through a block of 14 matches in nine weeks earlier in the season.

Sundowns have already been confirmed champions and are playing to become the first ever 'Invincibles', surpass the 71 points tally and complete the season having beaten all their opponents at least once if they win on the last day against Cape Town City.
