D-Day for Johnson at Chiefs?

Amidst the silence from Kaizer Chiefs on the future of interim coach Cavin Johnson at the club, KickOff has the latest update on the situation.

Despite already indicating that Johnson will not be retained as the senior team's coach ahead of the 2024/24 season, Chiefs are yet to officially announce what the future holds for the 65-year-old.

This website reported previously that indications were that the former SuperSport United head coach would return to his previous role as Head of Youth after the conclusion of the campaign.

However, new information reaching our desk is that Johnson himself has in the dark regarding his future at the club, waiting to hear from the Soweto giants what their plans are in a technical meeting that was scheduled for Friday.

With preparations to finalize the new head coach ahead of next season at an advanced stage, Chiefs are believed to have been locked in a meeting with their technical team to discuss their futures.

The Glamour Boys are expected to make big changes to their technical set-up, as a new head coach could come with his own staff.

Amakhosi Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr stated in April, speaking to the media at Luke Fleurs' memorial at FNB Stadium, that they are committed "to having a different technical structure next season".

Although Johnson is aware that he may no longer play a direct role in the senior team ahead of next season, what he will be waiting to find out is if he will return to his previous role as Head of Youth.

Former Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki was also previously redeployed from the Head of Technical to take over the hot seat but after he was relieved of his duties as head coach, he was let go completely.

Amakhosi legend Arthur Zwane also previously held a position in the development structures and was the head coach of the Diski Challenge team before getting involved with the senior team.

However, after Zwane was removed from the head coach position to make way for Ntseki ahead of 2023/24, he was not retained in any official role at the club.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Johnson in that regard.

This is a developing story and KickOff will keep you updated.
