Guardiola's ex-assistant turns his back on African giants job

The agent of Pep Guardiola's former assistant coach has confirmed his client is no longer interested in taking charge of one of the Africa's biggest teams due to his previous application being snubbed.

Following an underwhelming display during the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, manager Finidi George resigned from the Nigeria hot seat after just two games in charge as permanent boss.

His Super Eagles drew 1-1 with Bafana Bafana earlier this month, before a shocking 2-1 loss to Benin, which prompted an onslaught of criticism by the Nigerian press.

With George having since resigned from the role, members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are now believed to be looking for a foreign manager with their recent experiment with a native coach having not gone according to plan.

It is understood that the NFF has opened applications for the vacant role, with the organisation looking to appoint a new man at the helm by September, when the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers commence.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, the federation has received interest from as many as 15 foreign tacticians.

However, the list does not include Guardiola's former assistant Domenec Torrent, despite his previous interest in the job.

Speaking to the abovementioned Nigerian publication, Torrent's agent explained that his client was left disappointed by the NFF after they changed their mind about employing him a few months ago.

"It was a funny turnaround. I got a call from one of the men at the NFF that my client should be getting set for the role, and even instructed him to study games of the Super Eagles during the friendly games in Morocco", he told OwnGoalNigeria.

"After the games against Ghana and Mali respectively, my calls went unanswered.

"I tried to know what is going on but to no avail, and few weeks later, someone [Finidi George] else was announced as the coach.

"It's why my client won't be reapplying for the role now that it is vacant."

Per Transfermarkt, Torrent is currently in charge of Mexican outfit San Luis, and previously served as Guardiola's right-hand man at FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.
