The Bafana Bafana attacker, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, is believed to have been in talks with Ahly's domestic rivals Zamalek, who are reported to have requested that the 30-year-old not renew his contract with the Cairo-based outfit.

Tau has also been linked with a move to the United Arab Emirates, while Saudi Pro League clubs Al Kholood and Al Wehda have previously made offers for the star.

Due to the large amount of interest in the player, it has been suggested that Tau wants to leave the side as a free agent and has requested to do so, and is now said to be waiting on a response from the club.

However, it is further claimed that he has demanded that he receive the 60 million Egyptian pounds (about R22 million) that he would earn in his last season before agreeing to terminate his contract.

This comes after news suggesting that Al Ahly manager Marcel Koller has told the 12-time CAF Champions League winners' hierarchy that he is prepared to let the Bafana Bafana star go in order to make room for a "distinguished foreign player" to go into the 2024/25 season with.

Due to Tau's supposed desire to leave as a free agent and receive the full value of what is left on his deal, reports suggest that the club's hierarchy are now considering the option of keeping him at the club.

However, the matter is believed to lie in the hands of Koller, who will make the final decision.

Tau was reintroduced to the side after a lengthy absence from the team when he came on as a substitute to score a goal in the Red Devils' 4-0 dismantling of Al Mokawloon on Sunday.

However, Tau has not been named in the squad for the side's clash against Smouha on Thursday night, with it claimed the South Africa international has been ruled out due to an injury that also caused him to miss training on Wednesday, according to Kolel Koora
