RIP: Ex-Bafana Bafana star shot dead

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Morula has passed on after being shot dead in Mmakau on Wednesday.

Morula did not have a lengthy national team career, but it is worth mentioning that he was part of the Bafana squad that represented South Africa during the World Cup held in France back in 1998.

He is remembered as a hugely talented footballer, who cut his teeth in professional football in 1991 with Jomo Cosmos, before moving to play in Colombia and Turkey.

Morula died at the age of 57.

A member of the North West Masters Association, David Makgale, himself a former footballer with Black Leopards and Orlando Pirates, among others, has confirmed the sad news.

"He was shot dead at around 19h30 in Mmakau last night. He was shot five times and the bullet went through his bakkie," says the lanky ex-midfield man, talking to KickOff.

"He was closing the gate on his way to buy electricity when the suspect shot him. He had moved to Mmakau to stay with his mother," he explains further.

"We have lost a true legend. Remember he was the first player from Brits to play in the World Cup in 1998. He remained active with Masters here in the North West. We want to make sure we give him a dignified funeral."

It would seem his life turned out for the worst after playing days were over, as in 2015, he was arrested for armed robbery and car theft.

The former Ezenkosi player was allegedly found in possession of a signal jamming device along with Mamelodi mechanic Billy Malope and Johannesburg taxi driver Thabani Thwala.

In February 2015, they were reported as having tried to rob the Standard Bank branch of Ogies a sum of R3.4 million.

In 2014, Morula was also arrested for robbery in Klipgat, but the case was later withdrawn.

KickOff sends out heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the former footballer. May his soul rest in peace.
