Mokwena's Wydad 'land' ex-Barcelona man's services

Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club are now reportedly on the verge of landing a former FC Barcelona man's services.

With the Botola Pro 1 outfit aiming to fill its vacant sporting director role, they have identified Gerard Lopez as their ideal candidate to fill the position, according to Moroccan news site Sport 7

It is claimed the Red Castle are awaiting the Spaniard's arrival in the country for him to officially sign a contract and be presented to the club's supporters.

It has also been suggested that one of the reasons behind the hierarchy's desire to appoint Lopez to the role is the tiki-taka style of football the side would like to implement.

The club is also believed to have settled on Lopez because of his extensive experience with the Blaugrana's famed La Masia youth academy as well as their reserve team.

As a player, he represented the Catalan giants between 2000 and 2005. After hanging up his boots in 2011, the former Girona star replaced Johan Cruyff as Catalonia manager in 2013.

In 2015, he was named as the new manager of Barcelona B following their relegation from the second tier of Spanish football.

By the end of the 2016–17 season, though, Lopez had led the side back to the Segunda Division A.
