The 30-year-old, who currently plays for Qatari side Al Rayyan SC, made 70 EPL appearances during his time with the Saints, scoring three times and assisting four further strikes.

This is believed to be because the Egyptian Premier League giants are currently focused on securing the services of Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, who plies his trade for Hungarian top-flight side Ferencvarosi.

As such, it is suggested that Al Ahly may resort to signing Boufal if the player makes it clear he wants the move to happen, and if the transfer fee the Qatari side demands is deemed appropriate.

Boufal would come with some considerable European top-flight experience, given that he has also represented French sides Angers SCO and LOSC Lille, and garnered 99 Ligue 1 appearances.

He also spent a season at Celta Vigo, where he made 35 LALIGA appearances, scoring three goals and picking up four assists.
