Forgotten former Chiefs star relishing new challenge

Having become somewhat of a forgotten footballer, Kgaogelo Sekgota is aiming for a fresh start with newly-promoted Magesi FC after underwhelming spells with Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC.

The speedy winger is among the 'big names' signed by the top-flight newbies ahead of the 2024/25 season following their promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The move presents a fresh opportunity after an abrupt exit from Stellenbosch, where he had spent just seven months, contributing to a single goal. A veil of secrecy surrounded the reasoning behind that departure, though head coach Steve Barker alluded to disciplinary issues.

Prior to that, Sekgota had agreed to a settlement to leave Amakhosi, where he had spent two years.

Speaking to media during the club's recent player unveiling, the 26-year-old opened up on his fresh start.

"Being at Magesi is a blessing for me, my family, my friends, my supporters who believe me," Sekgota said.

"I'm grateful for this opportunity. Thanks to the chairman for giving me this opportunity, Thanks to the coach for this opportunity, the technical team and all the members of the Magesi family," he continued.

Having played abroad, Sekgota returned to South Africa to turn out for Wits and Chiefs before eventually landing up at Stellies – but had never played for a team from his home province of Limpopo. He is relishing the challenge.

"That's one of the most important things. I feel like being home is always exciting. This is the place I grew up [in] and I've got family, relatives that have only seen me from a distance. So, I look forward to showing them what they have only been seeing from a distance. I'm happy to be home."

The winger could get his first chance to impress in a competitive match when Magesi take on Sekhukhune United on 18 September at New Peter Mokaba Stadium in their opening match of the Betway Premiership season.
