'Even if we get Guardiola, Nigerians will still criticise'

A Nigeria star has now insisted that even if the Super Eagles hired Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, that would still not stop the people of his nation from criticising the national team coach.

The Super Eagles have endured a raft of coaching issues since parting ways with Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Peseiro left Nigeria after guiding the side to a runners-up finish at the tournament, which was the first time they had reached the final since winning the 2013 AFCON hosted in South Africa.

Finidi George was next to take over the reins in April 2024, but his stint would not last long as a draw against Bafana Bafana and a shock defeat at the hands of Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers would prove a catalyst to his departure.

After those two results, the Nigeria Football Federation sought a foreign technical advisor to assist George, but upon finding this out, the coach then resigned, later revealing he was kept in the dark about the appointment of a technical advisor.

The NFF tried to appoint Bruno Labbadia as their next head coach but the German manager walked away from the job after negotiations hit a dead end, partly due to tax-related issues in his proposed contract.

The Super Eagles are now led by caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen for their two upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda, but there is once again a big debate in the country as to whether a local of foreign coach should be appointed for the role.

Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface, however, believes that even if his country hired Guardiola, there would still be a hail of criticism from the Nigerian people regarding the team's coach.

"The truth is even if we bring Guardiola, Nigerians will still have something to say, but I'm a type of person that doesn't care about what people think, because they're not here with the team," the striker told Football Fans Tribe.

"Our job is to give it all on the pitch, and that's it. It's life. People will always criticise. So, no matter which coach you bring, people always have something to say."
