Quick remedy for Riveiro

Orlando Pirates return to the Betway Premiership on Tuesday with the hope of quickly forgetting about their shock exit in the Carling Knockout on Saturday.

As has become the norm for Pirates in the League Cup – now under the sponsorship of Carling – they will not be having their name written on this trophy again this year.

From the 40 editions of this competition that have been played since 1982, they have only ever won it just once.

That single success came in 2011 under Julio Cesar Leal when they overcame Bidvest Wits in the final.

Despite all the cup success that Jose Riveiro has enjoyed at the Soweto giants, he has also adopted the club's horrendous standing in this competition, which has brought frequent heartbreaks.

Fortunate for the Buccaneers is that as the new week starts, they switch focus to their 'bread and butter' in the Betway Premiership.

They will remain at Orlando Stadium with SuperSport United visiting on Tuesday (19:30) in the battle for points.

The visitors were hammered 4-0 by Kaizer Chiefs in the cup on Saturday and have only won once in six matches in all competitions this season.

Pirates have won their opening three league matches in the league, the one competition that their fanbase has as priority this season.

"If we have to rank the competitions, the league is the most important one," pointed out Riveiro after their exit from the Carling Knockout.

Pirates have not won the league since the 2011/12 season.

"Being at a club like ours and having the responsibility to compete and win almost every competition we play is a difficult task," says the Spaniard.

"We are trying.

"Whatever I'm going to say here will sound like an excuse, but the schedule is complicated.

"But it's because we have good players, with a lot of players in the national team, so it is a consequence.

"We need to continue finding the ways to compete in all the competitions," he adds.

Bucs have three league games to play before the end of the month with AmaZulu FC next on Friday, before travelling to TS Galaxy on October 29.
