Ahly boss warned against suffering same fate as Pitso

A former Al Ahly star has warned the club's current boss, Marcel Koller, against treading the path Pitso Mosimane did in the latter stages of his tenure with the side.

The South African tactician departed the 12-time CAF Champions League winners in June 2022 after being at the club for more than a year, with Marcel Koller coming into the position just a few months later and occupying it ever since.

The Swiss coach has won a considerable number of silverware with the Club of The Century, and has the chance to win some more when he and his players take on Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup final on Thursday.

This comes after the Cairo-based outfit beat Ceramica Cleopatra by two goals to one in the semi-finals on the weekend.

Al Ahly will, however, be looking for revenge against Zamalek after the White Castle managed to beat them in a penalty shootout to get their hands on the CAF Super Cup trophy last month.

After the upcoming Egyptian Super Cup decider, the Red Devils will then host United Arab Emirates outfit Al Ain in a 2025 FIFA Club World Cup second round encounter next week.

According to former Egypt star Mohamed Abdel-Galil, who spoke to Sport FM, these clashes will be pivotal in deciding Koller's future at the club, with some of his decisions being similar to Mosimane's before he was relieved of his Ahly duties.

"There is a composition by Koller in Al Ahly's formation, and this appeared in the match against Ceramica Cleopatra, by modifying Emam Ashour's position and the participation of Karim Nedved after a long period, and ignoring the reliance on some elements such as Reda Slim," he said, per Ahly News.

"Al Ahly's upcoming matches are decisive regarding Marcel Koller's future, whether against Zamalek in the local Super Cup final or against Al Ain in the Intercontinental Cup final.

"Koller's formation in Al Ahly Club's line-up is close to what was happening during Pitso Mosimane's period before his departure, as technical performance declined.

"The coach also has reservations and disagreements with the management, whether regarding deals or regarding the position of football director after Mohamed Ramadan's presence in the past period."
