Upgrades of R236 million for Mzansi's capital of cup finals!

It has been confirmed that the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which has hosted several cup finals in recent seasons, will undergo major upgrades worth R236 million. Here's a look!

The story

The state-of-the-art Moses Mabhida Stadium in eThekwini will undergo an important refurbishment 15 years after its grand opening ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba confirmed that a budget of R236 million to maintain and improve then stunning venue was approved by council a few months ago.

Some of the upgrades include an enhanced viewing platform with a 60% larger floor area and a cantilevered glass floor for an "air walk" experience.

Moreover, the 60 000-seater will have the option for colour-themed lighting to add the experience when hosting events and important football matches.

"We have no doubt these upgrades will not only guarantee the commercial viability of the stadium, but they will also improve the safety of residents and visitors," said Xaba, according to BusinessTech.

"This is in line with our vision of building resilient infrastructure that is aligned with evolving technological advancement."

"We want to assure all our stakeholders that the venue is structurally sound, and it will continue to host major events while the repairs are ongoing [which] has been approved and certified by engineers," the mayor added.

The upgrades are expected to be ready for the 2025 festive season.

Orlando Pirates won a third successive MTN8 final earlier this month, and of the seven MTN8 finals in total that the Bucs have played, six of them were held at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
