Magents: I'd play for Chiefs or Sundowns

In this edition of our feature In The Spotlight, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star Edward 'Magents' Motale.

The Tshwane-born former full-back reveals why he would join Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns if he were to be younger again.

Who was your idol?

"Jomo Sono. He was the best midfielder in our football."

What about Tito Maswanganyi, does he come anywhere close?

"I saw Jomo play, but I don't like comparing people, I don't know about Maswanganyi. I can't compare 1965 and 2024."

What is your favourite team?

"Orlando Pirates. I have been a Bhakaniya since I was a young boy. And again Jomo is the reason I followed Orlando Pirates."

Who was the most influential person in your football career?

"My Dad. He supported me with everything that was football-related."

Your break into topflight football, how did it happen?

"My big break came through Jomo himself after he saw me playing for my school in Pretoria.

"And just like that he recruited me to join Jomo Cosmos."

Who was your best friend in football?

"Mark Fish, we became best friends after we started sharing a room. Every time Pirates went to camp I shared a room with him."

What do you dislike about football?

"I left football in a good mood; it was my decision, so I cannot say there is something I don't like about the game. I don't remember football hurting me. I just felt it was enough.

"Even now, I'm still on good speaking terms with my former managers, bosses, and even coaches."

What is your favourite television show?

"News and Sport."

How can you describe your style of play to those who never got the opportunity to watch you live?

"Aah, they wouldn't understand, I just loved what I was doing. I just enjoyed my football. Whether we were losing or winning a match, I just wanted to have fun. I put myself first, then fans second."

If you could join any club right now as a player, which club would it be?

"I'd join Mamelodi Sundowns or Kaizer Chiefs. Both teams look professional from the outside."

Which opponent gave you sleepless nights?

"Only fast-paced players like Fani Madida, Joel Masilela, and Calvin Petersen, all those players who had speed."

What about Steve Lekoelea? He once told KickOff you are the reason Pirates signed him from Swallows after he made a meal out of you in that original Soweto Derby.

"Aah, Steve never did anything."

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

"Cape Town. It's more adventurous, there is a lot in Cape Town. It's a tourist province. You will find anything in Cape Town."
