Given the onslaught of criticism that had been aimed at him in recent months, it was a decision that was seemingly long overdue, and the club has wasted little time finding his replacement.
The Red Devils have now confirmed the appointment of Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim as their new boss.
It's done.

The 39-year-old has put pen to paper with the English giants after they triggered his release clause in his deal with Sporting CP said to be worth a reported £8.3 million (R190 million).
As part of the deal, Amorim is expected to remain at Sporting for their next three matches, including league ties against Estrela da Amadora and SC Braga on 1 and 10 November respectively - in addition to a UEFA Champions League game against Manchester City on 5 November.
As such, this means that the tactician will only make his coaching debut for United in a Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town on 24 November after the upcoming international break.
According to the New York Times, Sporting were demanding €5 million (R96.2 million) for Amorim's immediate release but United are said to be only willing to pay an extra €1 million (R19.2 million) on top of his release clause to get their new boss Amorim earlier.

Amorim will arrive at Old Trafford having tasted some success in recent years, having won the Primeira Liga (twice with Sporting), the Portuguese Super Cup (with Sporting) and the Portuguese League Cup (once with SC Braga, twice with Sporting) titles thus far in his short managerial career.
