Two African icons acquire UEFA coaching licenses

Two African players who have represented Arsenal and Chelsea have now attained their UEFA coaching badges. Here's a look!

The story

Chelsea legend Michael Essien recently announced that he had completed his UEFA coaching license, as he now looks to take the next step in his managerial career.

Revealing the news via his social media accounts last week, the Ghanaian legend wrote: "Finally done with my UEFA certificate in football management journey. Thanks all for the help. I keep learning about the beautiful game."

The now 41-year-old accepted a job at Denmark outfit Nordsjaelland in 2020, where he was reportedly tasked with helping young players transition into the first team.

Earlier this year, Essien told Joy Sports that he only became interested in coaching after he retired as a professional footballer.

He explained: "When I was playing, if you asked me if I wanted to go into coaching, I would say no.

"But as time passed, I started thinking: I've been in football all my life; why not take up coaching and acquire my license to still stay in football and be around the players?"

Elsewhere, Egyptian icon Mohamed Elneny also announced that he has attained a UEFA A License.

The 32-year-old currently plays in the United Arab Emirates for Al-Jazira, a club he joined as a free agent in July after spending eight years on the books of Arsenal.
