Khune burns Chiefs bridge?

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune faces legal obstacles if he is to reunite with his boyhood club in any shape or form.

The future of Khune became a big topic of discussion during the off-season after his playing contract at Naturena was not renewed.

At the time, the club's Marketing Director Jessica Motaung insisted that they were exploring the possibility of having the veteran take up an ambassadorial role at the side.

"We are in a process and discussions around the role that he can play. In fact, one of the things that I was researching in the UK, the ambassadorial role of other players for their clubs after they've retired or moved," Motaung said in September in an interview on Radio 2000's Game On.

"So, we are in discussions and I'm very excited we have meetings that are set up for us to really look at finalising and going through certain proposals with each other."

However, after the Ventersdorp native announced he is co-owner and ambassador of betting company TopBet, he could have affected any chances of working with Chiefs in the same role and in other capacities in the immediate future.

The Soweto giants are sponsored by betting entity SuperSportBet, which would be a direct competitor of TopBet, and therefore Khune's association with the two brands would be a conflict of interest.

Amakhosi are known to not take kindly to other brands leveraging off their brand through association with their players or former players.

This then means by owning shares in TopBet and becoming their ambassador, the former Bafana Bafana net-minder could have decided against taking an offer from the club he spent over 25 years at and instead went for charting his own path.

Khune also cannot have an official post at the Glamour boys side or any other professional team, like becoming a goalkeeper coach, in the near future, as stakeholders in football are prohibited from having interests in betting companies by FIFA.
