Man Utd sink Ngezana's FCSB for last 16 spot

Manchester United defeated Siyabonga Ngezana's FCSB 2-0 to secure a spot in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 on Thursday night.

Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen, Noussair Mazraoui and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir were handed starts in the Red Devils starting line-up, while South African defender Siyabonga Ngezana was also named in the FCSB team.

The visitors had a couple good looks at good in the opening 17 minutes and they should have been ahead when Rasmus Hojlund pulled the ball back for Mainoo, who sent his effort over the crossbar.

While the home side struggled to carve out any openings, Ruben Amorim's charges went close on 30 minutes via Rasmus Hojlund, who got on the end of Lisandro Martinez's cross but his header was saved by Stefan Tarnovan.

That proved to be the final chance of the opening 45 minutes, which proved to be quite a frustrating affair for the English giants while FCSB were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.

That nearly changed two minutes into the second half when substitute Alejandro Garnacho raced clear on goal, but the Argentine sent his strike against the upright in a one-on-one situation.

The deadlock was broken on the hour mark when Mainoo burst into the box and put the ball on the plate for Diogo Dalot to tap home in the six-yard area.

Mainoo then got his name on the score-sheet in the 68th minute by turning home a cross from Garnacho and giving the Red Devils a comfortable lead just minutes after the hosts had rattled the crossbar.

The Red Devils were able to see out the closing stages to seal their automatic berth to the last 16, while FCSB dropped to the play-offs.
