The change of dates on the calendar have left Itumeleng Khune having now waited over 500 days since he ran out as a starter in professional football.
Khune was in the stands – proud in his betting company shirt, on Saturday for the Soweto Derby, the blockbuster fixture which still counts as the last match he started from his time at Kaizer Chiefs.

That derby was played on November 11, 2023, with Chiefs losing 1-0 in what was his 10th consecutive appearance without a clean sheet.
After that, there were disciplinary issues, which subsequently left him suspended and to ever play again for Amakhosi just once when he came on for the last 14 minutes for a consolation appearance on the day he was honoured for long service at the club.
That was on May 18, 2024.
Since then, Khune had his contract not renewed with the club then offering him a non-playing position, which he has not committed to up to now.
This now means since his last 90 minutes of competitive football, days have turned into night 508 times.
From his last interview in November, Khune insisted that he still hasn't called time on his playing career, but it will be interesting if he ever makes a return after so long.
Khune never went for so long without playing 90 minutes throughout all his time at Chiefs from when he made his debut in August 2007.
The longest he stayed without playing was 347 days.
