In this week's edition of "Story Behind The Nickname," KickOff speaks to Boipatong-born former superstar Geelbooi "Gomma-Gomma" Masango about the origin of his famous nickname.
Masango made a name for himself at the now-defunct Giant Blackpool before moving to Vaal Professionals.
What's your nickname?
"Gomma-Gomma."
Who gave it to you and why?
"The person who gave me the nickname is no longer alive. Honestly, I couldn't understand the meaning of the nickname or his reasons for giving it.
"I was still young and playing in a local amateur team in Boipatong when I was promoted to their first team at the age of 14. I played in the old Ellerine's League while still in primary school, even facing my own school teacher in matches.
"There was a guy named Buti who was the team's number one supporter. He is the one who gave me the nickname 'Gomma-Gomma.' To this day, I still don't understand what it means.
"The only Gomma-Gomma I knew was the sofa brand, which is interesting, as that brand only came out after I received the nickname. However, some people have tried to explain to me that it was because of my strength and the way I used to make defenders fall. I was really speedy."
Did you like it?
"I did like it because it was unique. In the whole world, I'm the only Gomma-Gomma in football."
Any other nicknames besides Gomma-Gomma?
"Yes, they also used to call me Tiki; some still do. That's after the old money 'tiki' and penny."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"I would choose 'The Black Terror.' I used to terrorize defenders a lot in my time. I was very good."
