Koller 'requests' former star to return to Al Ahly

Al Ahly boss Marcel Koller has reportedly requested one of his former stars to return to the club on loan for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

More than a dozen players have left Al Ahly in the 2024/25 season, with five of them sold for sizeable fees, according to Transfermarkt.

While other departures have been loan moves, the five stars who were sold for big fees include Percy Tau, Rafaat Khalil, Ahmed Kendouci, Mostafa Aboul-Kheir, and Mohamed Abdelmonem.

The latter was the most expensive of the bunch, as the defender was sold to French top-flight side Nice for a fee of €4.2 million (R82.7 million) at the start of the season.

Abdelmonem got off to a decent start in France, as he played in six of the first eight Ligue 1 games he was available for.

However, things have since taken a downward turn for the 26-year-old, as he has missed 11 matches since then, with seven of them spent on the bench.

However, Al Ahly manager Koller is said to be desperate to reunite with Abdelmonem.

According to YSScores.com, the Al Ahly boss has requested the signing of Abdelmonem on loan so that he can join the team for the Club World Cup in June.

The Egyptian centre-back penned a five-year deal with Nice, but he is said to be open to rediscovering his confidence in a familiar environment like Al Ahly.

Meanwhile, it is said that Nice are not keen on the proposed move, as Abdelmonem remains part of their plans and they expect him to be around when pre-season starts, which coincides with the Club World Cup, as the competition ends in July.
