Onana: What we experienced in South Africa is unacceptable!

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has declared what Cameroon experienced during their recent trip to South Africa was "unacceptable".

Cameroon were recently held to a 0-0 draw by Eswatini in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The match took place at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, as Eswatini currently do not have a CAF and FIFA-approved venue to host home fixtures.

While the result itself was disappointing for the Cameroonians, it was their experience in South Africa that left them particularly unimpressed.

It is believed that the Indomitable Lions landed at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg the day before the match. However, due to their late arrival, their connecting flight to Nelspruit was cancelled.

As a result, the team reportedly had to travel by bus from Johannesburg to Nelspruit — a journey of approximately four hours — arriving at their hotel at around 4am on the morning of the game.

Onana has since criticised the ordeal and expressed sympathy for two of his teammates, Danny Namaso and Nathan Ngoumou, who were making their first appearances for the national team.

"I would like to apologise, on behalf of the team, to our two teammates who arrived for the first time in the national team, namely Nathan and Danny," said Onana during a pre-match press conference on Monday, according to Afrik-Foot.

"They love their country very much. They showed patriotism.

"What they experienced in South Africa for their first call-up is unacceptable.

"We are not going to rewrite history. I think that tomorrow (against Libya, editor's note), everyone will face their responsibilities. The most important thing for us is to win."
