PSL keeper ahead of Williams and Chaine?

Teko Modise has explained why he believes a certain PSL net-minder deserves the Goalkeeper of the Season award ahead of the likes of Sipho Chaine and Ronwen Williams.

With the season drawing to a close, debates have started around possible recipients of the annual PSL awards in what has been a campaign of highs and lows for the different clubs.

Mamelodi Sundowns' Lucas Ribeiro and Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates are expected to battle it out for the Footballer of the Season award. The Brazilian also leads the way in the race for the Golden Boot, with 13 goals to his name after 21 matches.

One accolade that remains wide open is that of Goalkeeper of the Season.

Elvis Chipezeze currently leads the log standings as far as clean sheets go, having kept an impressive 11 clean sheets from 22 games.

Williams, who missed several matches due to injury, is second with eight from his 14 appearances, while Chaine is third with eight from 18 appearances.

The next several weeks will prove vital for not only what the log table will look for the teams come May but also how the three best-performing shot-stoppers fare.

Speaking on SuperSport TV's ExtraTime, Modise explained why he would go for the Magesi FC man.

"I would give it to him," affirmed the former Pirates and Sundowns talisman.

"Mainly on, you look at the team, at the players [at Magesi], you look at the number of shots that he faces during a game. Does he have players defensively that might play in the national team?

"You look at the other players, you look at Sipho Chaine and you look at Ronwen Williams and they have defenders in front of them that are in the national team.

"So, I would give it to Chipezeze based on that."

The 35-year-old will be key in Magesi's bid to survive relegation. After a recent good run of form that has seen them collect four wins from their last five matches, they sit 11th on the standings.
