Kadodia maps path back to R900m league

Durban City chairman Farouk Kadodia has already mapped out the path for their return to the topflight following their heartbreaking drop to the second tier at the end of 2022/23.

At the time, they were known as Maritzburg United but have since undergone a re-branding after being forced out of Pietermaritzburg and Harry Gwala Stadium as a home venue.

Durban City currently sit top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings, eight points clear of second- and third-placed Kruger United and JDR Stars with seven matches remaining.

Kadodia has revealed the key factor to guaranteeing his club a spot in the Betway Premiership next season, with the side facing University of Pretoria away on Sunday.

"We're not thinking about the promised land just yet. If we can win three more games, then we can start talking. I think we should be okay," says Kadodia, speaking to KickOff.com.

"Last season, we had no home ground, no proper brand, and no supporters. It was barely a football team; it felt like a gypsy team. Although the name was Maritzburg, we were not playing in Maritzburg.

"You need a home.

"Wherever you stay, you need to build a home. Our squad was quite large; we didn't cut any corners. We provided the coach with all the players he wanted because we expected him to deliver and secure the championship that he deserves.

"After all these years in the NFD, he had never won a championship, so we wanted to ensure he had the resources to achieve that," added the club boss.

Kadodia also mentioned that he is not worried about losing any of his players, as most of them have contracts that extend beyond the current campaign.

"At the moment, most of our players have contracts, either with options or unfinished contracts. We would like to keep most of our players, but for now, we're not talking to anyone.

"Our focus is on winning the league."
