Sad end for ex-Chiefs man

Kaizer Chiefs discard Teddy Akumu's season at Japanese club Sagan Tosu has ended in disappointment as he makes his way out following the expiry of his contract.

Akumu failed to make a single league appearance in the J1 League at the end of the 34 games season.

The only action that the defender-cum-midfielder had was in the J League Cup where he has featured thrice and scored once.

Even with those league cup appearances, Akumu didn't play from start to finish being substituted after 56 minutes in his first two before being brought in to play 21 minutes in his last appearance in that competition back in May.

The Kenyan also played in the Emperor's Cup last 45 minutes in the only appearance that he made in June.

So bad has been Akumu's situation that the Emperor's Cup run was the last time that he played and has now gone for six months without playing any club football.

Akumu didn't play any competitive football through the 2022 calendar year and has not had a 90-minute run at club level since November 2021 when he featured for Chiefs against Moroka Swallows.

The 31-year-old joined Chiefs in January 2020 from Zambian club ZESCO United with so much hope of making a difference for Amakhosi but it ultimately ended on a sour note.

He had an encouraging start playing 12 games in the second half of the 2019/20 season, then featured in 25 the following season playing as a defensive midfielder or central defender but then found himself out of favour for the 2021/22 season.

It was a campaign in which he only managed 10 appearances with his last coming on November 28, 2021, and was released at the end of that season.
