'The biggest problem facing Benni in Kenya is...'

A former PSL coach has highlighted the challenges that legendary former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy will face in his new role as head coach of the Kenyan national team.

Kenya are set to play against Gambia and Gabon in 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.

"When I was there, the Kenyan national team had a strong squad compared to now, with my striker, Allan Wanga, and others," Luc Eymael says, speaking to KickOff.com.

"They even won the CECAFA tournament back then, and now the team is not as good as it once was.

"However, I hope there is still some talent left in Kenya. You might remember Dennis Oliech, who played as a striker and had a successful career in France and Belgium.

"Kenya certainly has some talent, but it requires a full-time commitment to discover it. You have to live in Kenya full time to discover it.

"I believe a knowledgeable coach like Benni can achieve positive results because there are there players who are Kenyans playing abroad, who can be incorporated into the team. Once Benni starts achieving results, we will likely see a significant turnout of fans supporting their national team. They have been disappointed with the team's performance for far too long.

"Recently, the team hasn't won anything and has struggled to qualify for tournaments," says the former Free State Stars coach.

Eymael says the Harambee Stars have suffered from having several coaches in the past who proved ineffective.

"I think Benni is smart enough to build good relationships with the players. One critical issue he needs to address quickly is the goalkeeper position. The biggest problem for the team lies in goalkeeping - they do have a couple of strikers and some experienced midfielders, but I believe Benni can identify new talent and bring this national team back together.

"I am confident that he will do well."
