Chiefs-linked star: Qatari League is one of the top leagues

An African star, who has been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, has emphasised the quality of football in the country, stating that the Qatar Stars League is one of the best competitions on the continent.

Michael Olunga, who plays for Al-Duhail SC, has been plying his trade in the country since joining from Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol in 2021.

Olunga is said to have been on Kaizer Chiefs radar in recent months according to local reports.

The Harambee Stars captain explained why the league is now able to attract higher profile players and how the league has grown to new heights in recent times.

Olunga's comments come after South African star Percy Tau's move to Qatar SC was announced on Monday, with the player joining the club on a six-month contract.

"It is not luck; they have really invested a lot in terms of football infrastructure, which is key for the development of the game. Without that, you cannot attract good players," Olunga said in an interview with The Asian Game per Africa Top Sports.

"If you attract good players, you will have an opportunity to equally mentor good young players, which has been a challenge in the past.

"Now, countries like Jordan, Iraq, and Iran are competing quite well. I give kudos to the Qatari government and football federation for their efforts in growing the game."

Olunga also pointed out that the QSL's reputation has grown significantly, but emphasised the importance of consistent competition for national team development.

"The QSL is one of the top leagues in Asia, but for the national team to grow, players need exposure to play week in, week out under pressure, similar to the European game and Champions League," he explained.

Olunga went on to stress the need to embrace responsibility and set a positive example for future generations.

"When you're a leader and a key player, you have to accept that responsibility and can't shy away from it.

"Maybe we won't achieve everything ourselves, but the footsteps we leave will illuminate the path for others to follow.

"It's a long journey, but I'm confident the national team is headed in the right direction."
