Unhappy return for Mbappe on France duty

Croatia 2-0 France

France's quest to progress from the quarter-finals were dealt a blow after a shock 2-0 defeat to Croatia in the first-leg.

Les Bleus named a competitive eleven in Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani in attack with William Saliba and Ibrahima Konate at the back, whereas veteran duo Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic set out the host' stall.

Didier Deschamps's men struggled to get rhythm and gave away a penalty in the opening ten minutes, but Andrej Kramaric failed to profit.

However, the Vatreni were in the lead in the middle of the first half when Perisic combined with Ante Budimir and saw the Osasuna forward make no mistake.

Perisic reversed the roles on the brink of halftime and doubled their advantage courtesy of a solid finish that gave goalkeeper Mike Maignan no chance.

A lot will be on the lines for Les Bleus in the second-leg which takes place on Sunday, as Croatia have all the cards.

Denmark 1-0 Portugal

Inaugural champions Portugal suffered a 1-0 loss to Denmark in the first-leg of their quarter-final clash at the Parken Stadium.

Captain and veteran Cristiano Ronaldo featured up top and joined by Pedro Neto, Rafael Leao and Bruno Fernandes, whilst the Danes named Rasmus Hojlund on the bench.

Nothing separated the two in the first half, but long-serving Christian Eriksen squandered a golden chance from the spot and left the A Selecao off the hook.

With time running out and a draw on the cards, the Danes struck the winner when substitute Rasmus Hojlund tapped in from close-range.

The return-leg takes place on Sunday, with the Portuguese needing to overturn the deficit for a place in the semi-finals.

Netherlands 2-2 Spain

Holders Spain grabbed a late equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw against Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals first-leg on Thursday.

Returning goalkeeper Unai Simon slotted back immediately, with Lamine Yamal and Pedri amongst the other stellar names, as the Dutch missed first-choice right-back Denzel Dumfries through injury though banked on star defender Virgil Van Dijk.

La Roja were in the lead after nine minutes courtesy of Nico Williams, who dispatched a well-timed delivery from Pedri.

Liverpool's Coady Gakpo restored parity inside the half-hour mark when he capitalised on a telling assist from Justin Kluivert to find the net.

The defending champions evening were compounded a minute in the second half as Tijani Reijnders put the Oranje ahead for the first time in the match.

Oranje were a man down nine minutes from time when Jorrel Hato got his marching orders for a poor challenge on Robin Le Normand.

The numerical advantage urged the holders on and salvaged a stalemate in added time where Arsenal's Mikel Merino bundled in a rebound from Bart Verbruggen.

Italy 1-2 Germany

Germany staged a second-half comeback to get the better of Italy with a 2-1 victory at a lively San Siro Stadium in Milan.

Azzurri missed key striker Mateo Retegui through injury, but had the league's second top-scorer Moise Kean as replacement, while Jonathan Bukardt made a debut for the Germans.

Italy went ahead in the opening-quarter when a cross-field pass across the face of the area by Matteo Politano rolled all the way through for Sandro Tonali to slot in.

Die Mannschaft trailed at the break, but bounced back a minute in the second half through a well-taken header from substitute Tim Kleindienst.

The match became evenly balanced thereafter, but the visitors grabbed control towards the last ten minutes when Leon Goretzka directed in a corner from Joshua Kimmich.

Having failed to make use of their home ground advantage, the Azzurri need to produce the goods out in Dortmund.
