Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter explains why he has picked Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly

The former Mamelodi Sundowns players were out nursing long term injuries and were not part of the Bafana side that last played against Nigeria in November. Dolly was out nursing a calf problem, while Zungu was sidelined by a knee injury.

The players have been included ahead of the 2019 Africa Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on March 24 in Sfax, Tunisia.

Bafana need at least a draw to qualify for AFCON, which will be played in Egypt.

“We’ve had a few of our players who’ve had long term injuries and we have two that are fit, but we don’t know how fit. We’ve got Keagan Dolly and Bongani Zungu. We’ve been in contact with both of their clubs close. The doc [Thulani Ngwenya] has been speaking to their medical departments and both players are clinically fit,” Baxter said on Monday while he was announcing his squad.

He went on: “They are in full training and they have minutes in the reserve team. Now I’m not sure that minutes in the reserve team and being clinically fit qualifies you to play in such an important game. Undoubtedly, if they are fit and looking sharp, the quality of Bongani and of Keagan will be welcomed. So I’ve asked the CEO [Russel Paul] if we can bring them to camp for further analysis.”
