Zungu earned a return to the national team following a year-long absence through a knee injury, which has also seen him side-lined for most of the current season for his French Ligue 1 side Amiens.
The 26-year-old last featured for Bafana in a friendly international against Angola in March and could now make his return in a do-or-die 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya this Sunday.
He has since explained his experience of having been out for nearly seven months, during which he admittedly also gained some excess weight.
“When I was injured, I had some difficulties where I gained some kilos and I had to work hard to [shed that and make my way back to fitness],” Zungu told SAFA from Tunisia.
“Coming to the national team is always nice. I felt so happy when I got the call-up, and so far, everything has been good and I’m enjoying [the camp].
“The spirit in the team is nice and the guys are so chilled, and we’re all looking forward to the match [against Libya].”
Asked whether he expected to be back, given he has not played a first team match since September last year, the former Mamelodi Sundowns star responded: “Honestly, I didn’t [expect to be called up] but at the same time I was happy when I did get the call.”
