Does Bafana have the edge over Tunisia?

Bafana Bafana's emphatic victory over Namibia on Sunday night has left their destiny in their own hands and needing victory to guarantee their place in the knockout stages of the ongoing AFCON finals.

Hugo Broos' men recorded their biggest win at the AFCON finals with a 4-0 win over their neighbours that sent revived hopes that Bafana can stage an upset in Cote d'Ivoire.

That win propelled Bafana to second place in Group E, just a point behind Mali who are already guaranteed of finishing in the top three bracket.

Mali will complete their group campaign against Namibia on Wednesday, needing to avoid defeat to finish in the top two.

As the West Africans come up against the Brave Warriors in San Pedro, Bafana will face off against Tunisia in Korhogo with victory the priority to avoid having to look over their shoulders.

Tunisia are the top ranked nation in the group yet they have sunk to the bottom after two games and will now need nothing less than a win to give themselves a chance in the group.

Bafana versus Tunisia history.

Bafana were 2-0 winners over Tunisia in the 1996 AFCON final with Mark Williams on target for both goals.

Then at the 2000 AFON finals co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria, South Africa and Tunisia met in a third-place play-off tie decided on penalties with Bafana winning 4-3 after playing out an entertaining two all draw.

Their next meeting at the 2006 AFCON finals played in Egypt with the Carthage Eagles coming out 2-0 winners in a Group C tie.

Bafana were awful at that tournament losing all their three group stages matches.

Two years later, the two nations were in the same group (Group D) again with the North Africans hammering Bafana 3-1.

That match played in Tamale, Ghana 16 years ago remains the last meeting between the two countries.

A group stages exit will be disaster for both Tunisia and South Africa, who are both former winners of the AFCON.
