‘They know why they are here’

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has made known his position on the forced changes that he will make on Friday in the AFCON qualifier against Congo.

Broos' charges play the first of their back-to-back matches against Congo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (19:00) minus Siyabonga Ngezana, Sphephelo Sithole and Thalente Mbatha, though they will welcome back inspirational captain Ronwen Williams.

The area of concern will be in central midfield, where Teboho Mokoena will lead despite having not played club football for the past month.

"We were happy in the past that we didn't have to make changes because everyone was always there," says Broos.

"Sometimes you change because there was a player who had a different performance and thought he deserved to be with us.

"This is a little bit different because we have two midfield players not there, (Thalente) Mbatha and (Sphephelo) Sithole, and one at the back in (Siyabonga) Ngezana.

"We are forced to change.

"I have always said to the guys in the past that we are not with 11, we are with 23 and I have confidence in them, and they know why there are there.

"If I shouldn't believe in them, then they shouldn't be here, so it doesn't worry me that the midfield and the central defence will be different.

"I have full confidence in the guys who will play tomorrow, and you will see that it will not play such a big role.

"Even if injuries are there, it will not affect whether we win or lose the match," says Broos, who has admitted that while the current camp didn't start perfect, this shouldn't be an excuse not to win.

Congo have had their issues and only arrived Gqeberha on the eve of the game.

"The first days of our camp were chaotic with players that were injured and had to be replaced.

"But when I see the trainings we did, I'm more comfortable because I have seen a hungry team.

"We want to have six on six to avoid the stress of that November month where you need another victory.

"It is up to us to be ready from the beginning of the game and I hope that the crowd help support us to make a good performance," the Belgian added.
