Number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is out nursing an injury for the rest of the season, so Bafana will have a different man in goal for the first time in this qualifying campaign.
Khune has conceded just one goal in five qualifiers, so whoever steps in will have to bring their A-game.
Baxter will pick three goalkeepers and he has a few options.
Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet, who many see as the man who should naturally step in for Khune, has kept nine clean sheets this season and has experience of playing on the continent in big matches with Bafana. He was given opportunities to prove himself under former coach Shakes Mashaba, so he would not be fazed by the challenge.
Another man who would love to get an opportunity to play is SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams, who is in good form Matsatsantsa, though he’s never really been convincing when in a national team jersey. Baxter has worked with him at SuperSport in the past and would know how to motivate the player, but it could be too big a game for the player to handle.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, who recently fought his way back into the starting line-up, is another option for Baxter. He is high on confidence and comes with a lot of experience of playing on the continent, both at club and international level.
There have been a few calls, especially from the AmaZulu camp, for Siyabonga Mbatha to also be included in the squad.
Mbatha has done well to keep his place in the team ahead of Moeneeb Josephs and he’d be a good back-up, while the experience of being in the national team set-up would do him a world of good.
