Stern warning for Bafana ahead of COSAFA Cup opener

Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios has challenged Helman Mkhalele's second-string team to make use of their opportunity in the COSAFA Cup.

On Wednesday, hosts South Africa face neighbours Mozambique in the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup, a match that Palacios says the squad made up of players playing in the PSL have no reason to lose.

"I'm happy because it's Hugo Broos' assistant Helman Mkhalele who is in charge of the team, now that's consistency," Palacios says.

"A good performance for a player in this tournament can make him [to] be considered for the World Cup qualifiers. This is a platform for these selected players to show us if they want to represent the country.

"I always say there's a club football player, and there's a national team player. This is the right platform for a player to show if he is national team material," he adds.

Palacios explains that winning the match is as important as each player given a chance putting their best foot forward and showing what they can do.

"The tournament is being hosted here at home, so obviously the crowd is going to be there. It's important for the players to take this cup seriously because they will be wearing the national colours.

"Our league is bigger than Mozambique's, so the players' performance needs to be bigger. With the money our players earn in the PSL, you can't compare it with the neighbour's.

"They must show us why they are earning what they earning. The players need to perform as they will be playing for their future.

"There might be scouts from overseas watching today's game, you will never know. It might present you with an opportunity to go to a bigger country.

"This tournament may take you overseas, you will never know who is watching."

KickOff in Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha is at 18:00.
