'There’s no respect for women' - Safpu blasts SAFA for Banyana treatment

The South African Football Players Union (Safpu) have accused SAFA of manipulating the Banyana Banyana World Cup squad regarding their bonus distribution.

In an embarrassing episode, SAFA were forced to select a make-shift Banyana squad to face Botswana in their final World Cup warm-up friendly after the regular squad boycotted the match over the ongoing financial dispute with SAFA.

"Danny Jordaan called a special NEC meeting on Sunday morning that took the decision to dismiss the girls because they want the FIFA money to be expressed in the contracts that they are signing," Safpu general secretary Nhlanhla Shabalala tells KickOff.

"Danny does not want to put the money in the players' contracts.

"Now it seems as if these girls are being done a favour. Banyana wants to play, and all they are requesting is their issue to be addressed.

"Finances are FIFA guaranteed, and are requesting that it reflect in the contracts that they will sign?

"They are trying to manipulate the women, there's no respect for women.

"That's what they are trying to do. We can't take this lying down.

"I don't even know why the game was taken to Tsakane when we have Loftus Versfeld Stadium and all these other facilities where they can play comfortably.

"This lack of respect for women is nonsensical, and it's continuing, it seems they are doing them favours.

"That's not going to happen. We can't have a pompous president of the FA.

"Now they want to come with threats and all sorts of things, making these girls appear as if they are not committed, not willing to play, they have issues.

"The girls are saying, address the issue that we are talking about."
