Pitso Mosimane challenges Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates to compete in CAF competitions

Sundowns are currently ranked 236 in the world club rankings while Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are sitting in position 332 and 418 respectively, according to FootballDatabase.com.

The Brazilians are ranked eighth in Africa while Amakhosi are 17th and The Buccaneers 22nd, as at 5 January 2020.

Mosimane's side qualified for the CAF Champions League quarterfinals over the weekend, which could add more points to their ranking.

"We have an ambition. We are a very ambitious club and if you want to be where you are with the world rankings, you can't play after every Sunday. Then your rankings will be there the way they are," said Mosimane.

"So if you want to be up amongst the big clubs you cant be a well-rested team. Barca plays, Liverpool plays every after three days. It's football."

Amakhosi have emerged as favourites to win the league this season and Mosimane has already invited them to challenge for continental honours next season.

"You might not be winning the local league. You might not be on top of the group but you achieve other things and the brand is bigger [when you play in Africa]," he added.

"It's known on the continent and not within the borders. You know what I am trying to say. That's huge for us. That's Mamelodi Sundowns. That's it.

"Otherwise you focus within the borders, you are doing well. Okay next year you are getting these games, let's go and see what are you going to do now when you have four games in hand. It's your chance now.

"We will see next year. We can judge next year. Not this year. I always say let's run the same Comrades Marathon.

"You can't run a half-marathon and I run Comrades Marathon and then you say I am ahead of you. Of course you ran 42 and I did 98 so that's the difference."
