Story Behind The Nickname: Khanyisa Mayo

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with Cape Town City's dangerman Khanyisa Mayo on his nickname 'Ikhadi lika Gesi'.

Last season the 25-year-old center-forward and Bafana Bafana international finished as the DStv Premiership top goalscorer.

This season in his 16 appearances in all competitions he has already found the net six times.

Who and where did you play?

"Khanyisa Mayo is a former South African youth international, he also played for SuperSport United youth and reserves teams.

"He also had some stints at Ubuntu Cape Town, Richards Bay FC, and Royal Eagles."

What's your nickname?

"Ikhadi lika Gesi"

Who gave it to you and why?

"I got it from Mapensela (SuperSport commentator Reginald Ndlovu). It's not possible to buy electricity without the card.

"I guess it's because every time I'm on the pitch, I bring some energy to the team.

"My style of play is energetic. Once in possession of the ball it's either a chance created or I'm scoring a goal.

"So because of those two qualities the guys always want me on the ball, or at least be in and around the box."

Did you like it?

"I did like it I must say, although my actual nickname is Section 10 because of my jersey number.

"But when Mapensela gave me the Ikhadi lika Gesi nickname I also liked it and went along with it because out of nowhere everyone started calling me Ikhadi lika Gesi.

"I said to myself okay, why not?"

Anyone not using it?

"Everyone calls me Ikhadi lika Gesi. But people who have known me since my youth football days still call me Section 10.

"But the popular one that is always on TV is Ikhadi lika Gesi."

If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"Sniper. I'm always sniffing in and around the box, and I'm always close to the goalposts.

"If a Sniper is around the bushes or on top of tall buildings he is always looking for a target. So my target is the goalposts. I'm always in and around the goalposts."
