5-Goal Thriller: Gallants eliminate Polokwane City

Marumo Gallants progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout after edging Polokwane City in a five-goal thriller on Saturday afternoon.

Polokwane made three changes from their draw against Stellenbosch before the international break, as they handed goalkeeper Brian Bwire his debut alongside recalls for Hlayisi Chauke and Stevens Goovadia.

Gallants, on the other hand, had only one change after their maiden win over AmaZulu, as Joseph Malongoane was not in the squad and he was replaced by Edson Khumalo.

Rise and Shine had a dream start as Chauke gave them the lead on nine minutes with a close-range tap-in, after a cut-back by Goovadia.

In an open game, Siyabulela Shai eventually equalised for the visitors ten minutes later with a low drive from the edge of the box that was too powerful for Bwire.

Dan Malesela's charges needed luck to go 2-1 up on the half-hour mark after Puleng Marema converted a penalty following a handball in the box by Khumalo.

Phuti Mohafe's men redeemed themselves ten minutes before the interval after Monde Mphambaniso made it 2-2 with a close-range header following a cross by Marvin Sikhosana.

Gallants were more intentional with their next goal shortly before the break, after Edgar Manaka gave them a 3-2 lead with low shot in the box after he was teed up by Shai.

City were looking for get back into the game as early as possible from the break as Sammy Seabi came close with a header that sailed over the crossbar.

Siwelele Sa Marumo were not sitting back and on 66 minutes, Manaka almost gave them a two-goal lead with a strike that was saved by Bwire.

Rise and Shine increased their intensity and with 15 minutes to go, Bulelani Nikani almost levelled matters with a header from close range that was kept out by goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

Malesela still had attacking intentions with ten minutes remaining as he brought on Gabadinho Mhango in place of Shai, in a tactical change.

With the match on the edge, Daniel Msendami had a chance for Gallants in added time with a strike towards the bottom corner that was saved by Bwire, as Malesela's men did enough to book a spot in the quarter-finals.
