Newcastle in KZN to host the annual Siyabonga Nkosi Challenge Cup

The tournament was established in 2006 by the Golden Arrows midfielder and it is aimed at creating a platform to young footballers to display their skills while positively contributing to their lives by raising awareness of social ills and encouraging positive living in the community.   Nkosi is delighted about the upcoming event.   "The tournament has now become one of the flagship events in my hometown and it would not have been the same without the support of the community," he says.   "The tournament has been a huge success since we started back in 2006 and in 2011 it was no different as we had 16 teams competing for top prizes. This year it promises to be even better as we will also be visiting places for the underprivileged handing out food parcels and there will also be coaching clinics on the final day of the tournament," he continues.   Nkosi further says that the presence of scouts in the tournament will no doubt encourage the younger players to up their game in the hope of playing football at the highest level.

_quote "It was in the dusty streets of Newcastle that the dream to play at the highest level started for me and I am sure that I speak for every youngster that they would want one day to represent their country and play in Europe," he states.   R33 000 was spent on prizes during the 2011 edition of the tournament hosted at Arbor Park, Newcastle with winners Dangerous Darkies walking away with R15, 000, a full soccer kit and a cup. The runners up walked away with R10 000 including full set of kit and medals while third and fourth place finishers walked away with R5 000 and R3 000 and full kit set respectively.   The same prices will be up for grabs this season.    One of the main attractions in this edition (2012) will be without a doubt the Siyabonga Nkosi Cup Pre-concert to take place at Amcor Dam, Newcastle on June 8 with the likes of DJ Chynaman, DJ Tira, Shota, Zakwe and a host of local artist taking it to the stage.   Nkosi adds: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors; Newcastle Municipality (Main Sponsor), Department of Sports and Recreation (Amajuba), Pick n Pay, MTN, BMW, Teljoy, Love Life, Ukhozi FM, SAFA NLFA, Ekhaya Lounge, Isivuno Energy cereal and Bigger than Life Entertainment."
